What is arthritis?
Arthritis is a common disorder that affects many people worldwide. Arthritis affects your joints and can involve pain and inflammation, making it difficult to have an active lifestyle. Although it is known more as a disease for the elderly, people of all ages (even children) can suffer from arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis alone affects almost one in every 100 adults worldwide. There are various types of arthritis, with the two most common types being rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a condition where your immune system attacks the membranes in your joints, causing inflammation. These joints (especially in your hands and feet) can become swollen, and stiff and cause pain.
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative or “wear and tear” type of arthritis, which happens when the cartilage in your joints breaks down from recurring stress or usage. It also involves pain and stiffness and usually affects the hip, knee, and even thumb joints.
CBD oil and arthritis pain relief
Many people with arthritis who use CBD experience pain relief, improved sleeping patterns, and/or lower anxiety. Several studies have indicated that CBD has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties which could be used to treat arthritis.
In 2006 a cannabis-based mouth spray medication was studied for efficacy in treating rheumatoid arthritis with great success.
In 2016, another study was done using CBD gel. Researchers once again found that the CBD gel helped to lower joint pain and inflammation and did not cause any negative side effects. CBD oil is also known to help pets with arthritis. (Read more about CBD for pets here: https://www.thesilverleaf.co.za/cbd/cbd-oil-for-pets/
How does CBD work to treat arthritis symptoms?
CBD could have an effect on both the pain and inflammation related to arthritis, by interacting with two receptors, CB1 and CB2. CB2 plays a role in your immune system, which is why cannabidiol may be especially effective against the autoimmune disease of rheumatoid arthritis. CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties may even help to slow down the progression of arthritis and prevent more serious damage over time. Other symptoms like tiredness and a raised body temperature can also be treated with CBD.
How to use CBD for arthritis:
CBD products come in various forms. You can take CBD oil orally or some products be applied topically (directly to your skin) to help with stiff and aching joints.
